It actually gives you the opportunity to watch your favorite show wherever you are with just a use of your PC or laptop. So you do not have to rush back home to see your favorite program.
2. With a normal commercial cable and satellite TV services, billing comes in monthly and installation fees are required which makes it expensive and costly. And some people are having a hard time with having clear signals of their chosen channels. Whereas a PC satellite TV software will only have the cost of the disk itself. With a one time fee, you are provided with a thousand and more channels for you to choose from right after the installation.

In the last twenty years the development of HD TV has been clearly evident. It has now encroached into television broadcasting and films and is rapidly becoming affordable for many consumers. Fundamentally HD or High Definition refers to a television that offers around double the resolution of standard definition digital images. In addition however there is ‘true HD’ that refers to television sets that have a resolution of 1920 by 1080p. This is the most effective form of high definition and gives the viewer an unrivalled experience.

The benefits of high definition are that viewers see films and television programmes exactly how they were intended to be seen, with a quality that puts them in the heart of the action. It is not just film and television however; sporting events are now being transmitted in HD as a matter of course. Personally the pleasures of watching a wicket tumble in enough detail to see the look of disappointment in the batsman’s eye is reason enough to buy a new TV set.

HD is simply the next evolution of the TV set that has been taking place since the twenties and thirties. The distribution of televisions across the world is staggering, considering that the first colour TV was only released around fifty five years ago this usage make the television one of the most important technological developments of the twentieth century.

Television allowed the moon landings to be transmitted across the planet, showing an unprecedented audience one of the seminal moments in history. Viewers have seen sporting events such as England’s victorious World Cup Final in1966 and Mohammed Ali’s legendary Rumble in the Jungle. Today the viewer is given the opportunity to see events such as these in superb levels of detail, unimaginable to those viewers who saw Neil Armstrong taking that small step and giant leap.

The early years of HD TV can be traced to the work of the Japanese Broadcasting Cooperation in the nineteen seventies. Development occurred with gusto and within a decade the first HD broadcast was made in America, understandably public interest in the innovation was immense. At this stage however the high definition that has come into fruition today was only a small part of the ‘advanced television’ studies, these studies were still focussing upon analogue signals. In the nineties though this was changed, the future of advanced broadcasting would be digital.

HD has been in development for over thirty five years and it is only now that it has finally entered the commercial sphere as a popular alternative to standard definition. In the next five years we will see the switching off of the analogue signals for a complete digital network. Subsequently, once this occurs the demand for high definition will be greater as many will be buying new televisions for the change. Today many of the televisions on the market are described as HD ready or compatible; this means that they will be able to show high definition signals although for true high definition the 1080p symbol should be looked for.

Hopefully this article has gone some of the way to explaining what HD is and how it is set to change the way television is watched. The article has also attempted to highlight how important to society television is and how the evolution of picture clarity is only a manifestation of this importance. Whatever can be said about the television, it has allowed the world to view pivotal moments in history; high definition will continue this role, just at a higher level of picture quality.

What if you could watch all your favorite movies and TV shows from the comfort of your home – whenever you wanted to watch them. Wouldn’t that get your pixels firing on all cylinders?

Well, now you can!

Of course, this is nothing new, since one obvious way to do this is through your cable company which more than likely already offers On Demand movies and programs. However, there are many drawbacks to these cable services, with cost being the major concern.

But forget cable services, that’s strictly old school. Right now we are entering the dawn of a new age in home entertainment – heralding the arrival of Multiplex TV.

Mainly because we are seeing the fusion of your TV and computer screen. The marriage of your TV screen with your computer screen is fast approaching, if it hasn’t already arrived. Probably eloped while you weren’t watching; but many smart consumers have already taken note and taken advantage of these two merging entertainment forces.

Although using the Internet as a vehicle to deliver high-quality entertainment to your TV screen is still in its infancy, there are quite a number of services and products out there which will allow viewers to gain access to streaming on-demand TV programs, movies and original online content via the web. These services will greatly expand the level of your home entertainment experience and enjoyment.

So the real question is where and how do I gain access to this vast and powerful online database of streaming media?

There are numerous services you can choose from and some of them are even free, while most are subscription based. Regardless, all will provide you with more than enough content for totally enjoying online streaming media from the comfort of your home.

Here, in my opinion, are the best options available right now and a few upcoming ones you should know about.

1. TVersity

TVersity is a free program you can download for free from tversity.com. TVersity works by installing a media server on your PC that will transmit your media to anywhere you like. In conjunction with a gaming console such as Playstation 3 or Xbox 360, TVersity will open up to you a wide variety of media from the internet. One of the main features that make TVersity so great is that it can convert your files into the correct format for easy streaming. This is very important because certain gaming consoles can only play certain file formats. TVersity eliminates any playback problems, no matter what type of media hub you’re using such as Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, iPhone, PSP, or others.

2. Vizio’s Connected HDTVs (Coming in Fall 2009)

Vizio is planning to have their own Internet-enabled high-definition TV set which is coming out in the Fall of 2009. The details are still in the works, but these Television sets should have the capability to connect to your home internet feed, through an Ethernet connection or a wireless signal – allowing you to access all the online content providers, such as Netflix, Amazon and Blockbuster. If these TV sets actually produce even half of what they are promising, it may be a worthwhile investment and you should hold out until they are released if buying a TV is high on your list of things to do.

3. LG’s NetCast Entertainment Access HDTV (Coming in May and June 2009)

This spring LG is introducing a Television set that has their NetCast Entertainment Access function built in. Perhaps, seeing the potential Blu-ray players have with streaming capability, LG has opted to do away with the box altogether. There will be four internet-enabled TV sets: the 42LH50 and 47LH50 LCD TVs and the 50PS80 and 60PS80 plasmas. All the television sets will allow access to Netflix, CinemaNow and YouTube; eliminating the need for alternative devices by gaining access through an Ethernet connection.

4. Media Mall’s PlayOn Digital Media Server (Price: $40)

Media Mall is a third-party software that lets you watch Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, CBS, CNN, ESPN and more on your TV. Basically, it enhances the streaming functions of your video game console. You can run the program on your Windows PC and this allows your gaming console to access streaming data via your computer, to be displayed on your TV set. Isn’t technology wonderful?

5. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (Price: $199 – $299; $399 – $499)

The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are not just gaming consoles, they also have the ability to be full featured media centers. For example, Xbox 360 is capable of supporting Netflix streaming and Xbox Live MarketPlace allows for the purchasing of movies or TV shows. Playstation 3 has a similar feature, the Playstation Network Store, which you can download video content to the internal hard drive for viewing. Plus, by adding third-party software, your Xbox and Playstation 3 can be made to support internet streaming from Hulu.com, Amazon On Demand and other such movie providers.

6. LG BD 370 Blu-ray Player (Price: $330)

This LG Blu-ray player comes equipped with NetCast Entertainment Access. You can stream video from Netflix, YouTube and CinemaNow. (CinemaNow is similar to Amazon Video On Demand) The LG BD 370 will quickly become a main asset to anyone’s Home Entertainment Network.

7. Samsung BD-P1600/BD-P4600 Blu-ray Player ($229 – $499)

The Samsung BD-P1600 and BD-P4600 allows for Netflix and Pandora instant streaming, you can also listen to great tunes or watch your favorite movies. They are both Profile 2.0 Blu-ray players, bringing you great high-definition quality from using Blu-ray Discs. Connection to the internet is by an Ethernet port.

8. Roku Digital Video Player ($99)

The Roku Digital Video Player is a very cheap way to bring streaming internet media to your Television set. It was released when Netflix launched its “Watch Instantly” program. You connect the player to your home network via an Ethernet cable and you can then select from a wide range of standard to high-definition connections to your television set. The Roku player supports Amazon On Demand as well, giving you another great choice on how to watch your movies. You will get more than 50,000 titles from Amazon Video On Demand and Netflix, with many available in HD.

9. Vudu ($149)

Like Roku Digital Video Player, Vudu is a box you connect to your Television set giving you access to over 13,000 movies. Vudu can be a perfect addition to your home entertainment network. You can also listen to music from Pandora via Vudu Labs on your television set.

10. Netflix ‘Watch Instantly’

Netflix subscribers who have plans $8.99 or more can take advantage of Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” program, giving them access to over 12,000 movies. You can access this program through your Windows PC, Intel-based Macs, or a number of other devices such as Roku Digital Video Player, LG BD 370 Blu-ray Player, Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-ray Player, and Samsung BD-p4600 Blu-ray play.

11. Amazon Video On Demand

Amazon’s Video On Demand has a current catalog of more than 40,000 titles to choose from, including HD movies and TV shows which are available for watching in the comfort of your living room. You can either purchase or rent these movies/TV shows and prices range from around $14.99 to $2.99. It provides a convenient way for you to watch High-definition quality movies and TV shows on your TV, all without ever having to leave the house. Amazon Video On Demand in HD is currently available on the following compatible devices, the Roku Digital Video Player, TiVo S3, the Sony DMXNV1 Bravia Internet Video Link, and Panasonic VIERA Cast enabled HDTVs.

12. Hulu.com

Together, NBC Universal and News Corp have produced Hulu.com which provides full-length, DVD quality internet streams of movies and TV shows for FREE. Of course you do have to deal with a few 15 to 30 seconds commercials every now and then, but the benefits will outweigh this inconvenience for many viewers.

As you can plainly see by the variety and number of different ways you can access streaming movies and TV shows via the Internet; home entertainment is definitely going through a major transition and everyone wants in on the action and potential profits. The ordinary viewer has a whole array of options and choices when it comes to choosing the system that will deliver their streaming videos, movies and TV programs. It makes for a perfect marriage, now lets bring on the honeymoon.

It is a fact of life that our lives are slowly but surely being ruled by TV, not that what we do is controlled by TV but that it is becoming a feature of modern homes that there is a TV in every room.

For example in the Authors home we have a total of 4 TV’s located;

In the lounge – obviously.
In the kitchen – watched when cooking or cleaning up.
In the bedroom – watched in the morning and last thing at night.
In the kids room – as they don’t want to watch the same things we do.

The TV’s are driven by 4 types of content, Sky, Free view, DVD and Bluray all located at different positions around the home.

It is obvious that it would be desirable to view all content on all TV’s depending on which room the viewer is located. There are many methods available in order to do this and this article has been written to discuss the pros and cons of each.

Wireless Video Senders (None Hi-Def)

This is always the method that people try first with mixed results. They are generally made up of a sender and receiver which connects to the source (single) via Scart and then wirelessly transmits the video and audio to the receiver (which is connected to the remote TV again by Scart). There are 2 flavours of wireless video sender which use 2 separate frequency ranges, 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Generally the 2.4 GHz senders are much cheaper, for good reason. Unfortunately you probably already have a variety of devices in the home using the 2.4 GHz frequency band including Baby Monitors, Door Bells and Wireless Networks. These will all interfere with the video sender making the picture unwatchable. The 5 GHz senders are better but still not perfect.

Wireless video senders (None Hi-Def) are useful as a quick fix but suffer from the following problems;

Interference from other devices
Low definition signal
Generally Single Source

Wireless Video Sender (High Definition)

High Definition Video Senders are relatively new and as such still quite pricey at the time of writing we could only find 2 models available in the UK;

Marmitek Gigavideo 800
Gefen Wireless HDMI Sender

Both of the above models have connections for several input devices (so you can connect Sky HD, Bluray player etc at the same time.

The main problem with the above 2 devices is that they do not have a “pass through” for the local TV i.e. there is no way to connect the living room TV to the HD sources as well as the sender without additional equipment, the only way to currently do this is to use a HDMI Splitter. This mainly because these products are designed to be used in one room to connect the HD sources to a wall mounted TV or Projector where wiring would be a problem. Used in these scenarios the performance of the wireless HDMI video senders is very good and they do not suffer from interference like the low def senders above.

Cabled Install – Coax

This WAS generally the easiest method of distributing video around the home (especially for SKY) as most homes have coax (aerial connections) in most rooms already. Using Sky Magic Eyes and the RF2 output on the back of Sky boxes it is possible to watch Sky programming in every room and be able to change the channel from the remote TV. The main problem with Coax is that it is very old technology which has been phased out of modern equipment, i.e. you will not find a Coax output on any DVD player let alone a Bluray player.

Cabled Install – HDMI

HDMI is without doubt the connection method of choice for High Definition Video Signals. It’s an established technology with a whole plethora of connection products available such as;

HDMI Switches – for connecting multiple sources to one HDMI Port.
HDMI Splitters – for connecting multiple TV’s to one source i.e. lounge and kitchen TV to the same source.
HDMI Switcher Splitters – which combine the functions of the switcher and splitter above.
HDMI Matrices – These perform the same function as the Switcher Splitter above but allow you to view different sources on different TV’s i.e. Bluray in the lounge, Sky in the Kitchen.

Using a combination of the devices above it is possible to build any HD distribution system for your home.

There are however a few problems with HDMI;

Cable Length – The maximum realistic cable length for HDMI is about 15m. For lengths over this HDMI Extenders must be used.
Cable Routing – It is not possible to put your own connectors on HDMI cables so you have to ensure you buy the correct length cables and route them with the connectors already attached. The other problem with HDMI cables is that they are quite fat and stiff (as they contain so many individual wires).

Cabled Install – CAT5/6

CAT5/6 cable is the same type of cable as used by computer networks all over the world. It is much easier to route that HDMI cable and there are faceplates and connectors freely available.
In order to route Hi-Def signals over CAT5/6 you need HDMI CAT 5/6 BALUNS these take HDMI in one end and then spit out a CAT5/6 compatible signal at the other end. At the other end of the cable run another BALUN converts the CAT5/6 back to HDMI.

The main problem with using CAT5/6 to distribute HDMI signals is that it is a Point to Point solution and you cannot expand the number of receivers without running another length of CAT5/6 from the source.
Cabled Install – TCP/IP (also known as HDMI Over IP)
HDMI Over IP has the same advantages as CAT5/6 (i.e. it uses the same cables) but it is a one too many solution i.e. one transmitter can server several receivers. This means that the system can be expanded in the future easily and cost effectively.

In the Authors opinion the best current way to distribute video around your home is to use HDMI connections for close components (i.e. in the lounge) and then use HDMI Over IP systems for the longer runs.

An example of such a system can be found in the author’s home please see below for an example.

Lounge
Bluray Player -> HDMI Switcher Splitter

SKY + HD -> HDMI Switcher Splitter
HDMI Switcher Splitter -> TV & HDMI Over IP Transmitter

Kitchen
HDMI Over IP Receiver -> TV

Bedroom
HDMI Over IP Receiver -> TV

Kids Bedroom
HDMI Over IP Receiver -> TV

This system allows any TV in the house to display what is being shown on the Living Room TV. The HDMI Over IP solution also allows remote control signals to travel back along the network which means we can change channel from the bedroom etc.

In the future we may upgrade the HDMI Switcher Splitter to a HDMI Matrix which would allow us to watch different sources in different rooms.

Both DirecTV and Dish TV recently announced they will bundle their Satellite TV service with high-speed Internet service via satellite through WildBlue Communications.

Cable television has been leading the way, bundling not only cable TV, but phone and high-speed Internet services. People are looking for two things when it comes to television and Internet connection – price and service. Cable has been aggressively responding, and Satellite TV is starting to get the message.

WildBlue launched its high-speed Internet connection service a year ago and has 60,000 subscribers. Their monthly service ranges from $49.95 to $79.95, with download speeds of up to 1.5 megabits per second. Their one draw back is the $299 equipment charge.

Pricing is yet to be determined for Dish Network and DirecTV packages bundled with WildBlue services, but they will have to offer a smaller equipment charge, or no charge at all in order to be competitive.

Satellite TV companies have offered DSL Internet connection for some time. They attempted to market to people without cable access in rural and remote areas. But both DirecTV and Dish Network have had miserable sales due to uncompetitive prices. DirecTV charged $580 for installation alone. The only people who bought the services were those that had no other alternative for high-speed connection, but now local phone services are able to reach these customers with radio towers.

Bundled Services is the Future

Customers don’t want to deal with a myriad of companies. They demand more simplicity. They want to deal with a single company that is willing to discount multiple services.

Comcast, the largest cable provider in Colorado, offers packages starting at $112 for cable TV, Internet service at 6 megabits per second and phone service. According to Cindy Parsons, spokeswoman for Comcast Colorado:

“We are accustomed to competition and expect there will be a wide variety of promotions from our competitors.”

Qwest Communications recently dropped the price of its bundled services. New customers can pay about $87 per month for local and long distance calling, 1.5-megabits Internet speeds and satellite TV service.

The two satellite TV powerhouses will have to offer similar bundled prices if they are going to remain competitive. And equally important is their Internet connection service will need to be reliable.

This new deal with WildBlue Communications will help Dish Network and DirecTV better compete with cable and telephone companies such as Comcast and Qwest. Consumers should benefit with alternative solutions and lower prices.

With over 2000 channels at a one time only fee of $39.95, is the cheapest for the best quality that I have yet to see for PC satellite TV.

Many PC satellite TV offers are not of the same quality as this one. I have been using it for several months. Had paid the original cost of $169.00 and still thought that was a great deal for getting PC Satellite TV.

Among the 2000 channels they offer from around the world, you can get sports from many different countries including the united sates and Europe. I found that once you install the software on your pc, it is very easy to use. You can easily browse through hundreds of channels from around the world. These channels include sports, new, movies, music, weather, kids channels, educational and more.

They give you so much to choose from sometimes it is hard to make a choice. When you get PC satellite TV on your computer you can do almost anything you want when it comes to PC satellite TV for entertainment and information.

The software package comes with an automatic membership to receive all the stations. PC satellite TV allows you to capture your channels from any location in the world. This makes it great when you download it to your laptop. As long as you have Internet access you can plug in and watch.
