It almost sounds too good to be true: using Skype without a PC, on the go. Belkin has answered the call by offering a Wi-Fi phone pre-loaded with Skype software. DigitalJournal TV gives you an overview of what’s hot and not about Belkin’s pet project. Digital Journal — Skype is known for giving you the ability to make cheap phone calls through your PC. And we all know the mobile benefits of the everyday cellphone. Combine the two and you get the Belkin Skype Wi-Fi Phone, a useful handset for anyone who often phones friends or relatives overseas. As the DigitalJournal TV team discovered, using this Skype-enabled phone will let you make international calls for pennies per minute. Similar in shape to the common candy-bar phone, the Wi-Fi Phone offers a nice grip to make calls, feeling a bit more rugged than other fancy cells. But its looks are secondary — this gadget is perfect for the road warrior calling internationally. Pre-loaded with Skype software, users connect wirelessly to a Wi-Fi hotspot (found in coffee shops, restaurants and some cities have city-wide coverage). It’s a simple process, considering how widespread Wi-Fi has become. You don’t need a PC or a Web browser. The phone costs 9 USD (order from the US or Canada) and a monthly subscriber fee of about gives you unlimited calling. Impressive voice quality, quick connections and an intuitive interface makes the Belkin phone a worthy contender in the bustling market of “world phones.” Is this phone right

Actualy, it won’t work at a starbucks, or hotel… most require you to click on an okay button on a webpage, and this phone has no browser to do that, effectively keeping you locked out and only able to access totally open wifi networks (few), your own totally open wifi, or your locked network using your crypto key.

Belkin Wifi Phone sucks– the linux it uses crashes very frequently and this causes it reboot, which takes 2-3 mins complete. And by frequently i mean, if you press buttons to fast, or try to view your call history– it is most irritating when u are trying to make an important call, and you have to wait 3 mins because the phone crashed and is booting slowly and trying to register on the network, and asks you for the password.

do u know if you can access them anyway with secure line? I have an issue with netgear and numbers never go correctly.

Best deal is signup for a Skype Prepaid plan, I pay less than $12 for 3 months of unlimited calling USA/Canda. Thats about $4 a month for unlimited calling. Then, if you need a flashy cell phone, get a red or black VIRGIN MOBILE SUPER SLICE, and you only need to auto top up on it $10 on it every 45. That’s like $80 a year, or about $6 a month. So for $10 a month you get unlimited calling and a cell phone with voicemail. Only answer important calls, otherwise RETURN ALL CALLS with Skype.

yes it’s a great deal. For over a year now, Skype has been my ONLY phone, and I have one of these belkin phones. There are SOOO many unsecure routers out there, I’m always able to find one when I’m out and about. You just have to get used to not being able to talk on the phone while driving in your car, but that’s a bad idea anyway, so what’s the loss really?

This is a POS…the model is ancient by today’s standards having originally come out in 2006 or 2007. Very sluggish menu response and the damn thing can’t hold a connection if its miserable existence depended on it.

    Look into the Ipevo instead.

  16. rml695 says:

No, no SIM in this device.
